Back when I was a child an advent calendar held the thrill of waking up in a morning and discovering if you’d got a donkey or a candy cane behind a cardboard window. How times have changed. My kids would look at me with disgust if I pulled out something simple like that on the first of December. The main thing that they are both after is a Lego Advent calendar.
I took advantage of my recent trip to Copenhagen to go and have a good look around the flagship Lego store there and see what this year’s ranges include.
Lego City Advent Calendar – 60235
The Lego City Advent Calendar has to be the original and classic of Lego’s Advent Calendar range. Perfect for both boys and girls who love Lego you can’t go wrong with it. Looking at the contents of this year’s calendar there’s also quite a few figures in there.
Lego Friends Advent Calendar – 41382
For those children that are big fans of the popular Lego Friends range this is exactly what they would love. There’s more pink and purple bricks than in the City calendar but notably fewer Lego people. There is a Christmas tree, snowflake, a candy cane and a train.
Lego Star Wars Advent Calendar – 75245
Perfect for Star Wars fans young and old, the Star Wars advent calendar for this year includes 6 mini figures (one of which is an exclusive Luke Skywalker in Ahch-To Island outfit) and 4 Droid figures. Two of the characters are also Christmas themed.
Harry Potter Lego Advent Calendar – 75964
The advent calendar that my daughter is most excited about this year is the Harry Potter one. She is desperate to have one to start opening on December 1st.
With six Harry Potter mini figures and Hogwarts themed festive builds like a laden feast table from the Great Hall, Hedwig and a mini Hogwarts Express the set gives fans a wonderful array of Harry Potter builds to either display or play with.
Retired Sets
As well as this year’s sets from Lego it is worth noting that you can still get hold of some of the retired sets from previous years. Prices are very similar to those for this year’s sets, and in some cases they can even be slightly more. If you want to get something a little bit different though they can be worth buying.
The 2018 Lego City set 60201 is very similar in style to this year’s one with a mix of mini figures, vehicles, gifts and festive themed builds.
There is an absence of people but again an abundance of pink and purple in the 2018 Friends Calendar (set 41353). That’s unlikely to matter though to most Lego Friends fans who I know will love opening this in December.
For Star Wars fans their luck is in as both the 2017 (set 75184) and 2018 (set 75213) advent calendars are still available. Both include a large number of Star Wars mii figures as well as items from the films, making them a must have for fans.
